How to make a difference in your community during the COVID-19 Pandemic

With Stay at home orders in effect for Houston area counties and the social distancing guidelines in place for the foreseeable future, we might find ourselves with some extra time on our hands. The following list contains ways you can help make a difference, if you are able, in your community during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

  • Donate to the Houston Food Bank, your local food bank, or Feeding America
  • Support services that serve seniors or others who may be housebound or reluctant to leave home.
  • Check in with friends, family, and neighbors.
    • Many people may be dealing with difficult situations that they won’t share on social media, such as potential exposure to the virus, job insecurity, or chronic health conditions. Personal support is important, and a phone call or text can work wonders. But if you can, offer to have groceries delivered—H-E-B and others are now offering free curbside pickup—or run errands. Gift cards are another good option for those who might be hurting financially.
  • Order takeout or delivery from your favorite local restaurants
    • Utilize apps like Doordash or Grub Hub to have food from local restaurants delivered directly to your home. You can also purchase gift cards directly from the restaurant to help support them during this time.
  • Give blood at your local blood bank
  • Support Kid’s Meals Inc by donating. This organization delivers meals to pre-school children in need.
  • Support the Houston Humane Society, or your local Humane Society to help pet owners and pets in need during this time.
  • You can support the Texas Diaper Bank, which helps provide diapers to those in need, by donating on their website
